How to Freeze Cake Pops or Cake Balls

Do you want to know the most common question people email me about is???

“Can you freeze cake pops”????

For the  most part I have sort of guessed about the answer, since technically I myself have never done it.

Well, that has changed!

With two kids literally under my feet all day and a newborn attached to me. There is always someone or something (Hello, laundry pile.) that is demanding my time. It has become an absolute need to find ways to save time and prepare in advance.

I’ve learned that if you can create enough wiggle room for the inevitable and  unexpected twist of plans that can, has and more often than not tend to occurs, I am less likely inclined to be pulling out fistfuls of my hair, due to the stress.

Have I mentioned how crazy my household is at the moment?? With the arrival of the baby, life got much more interesting in regards to time management, organization and schedules.

Lets just say I have room for A LOT of improvement.

But back to cake pops and to answer the question….

“Can cake pops be frozen”???

Well I have an answer for you all now…

Yes! Cake popscan be frozen and although I didn’t make them, cake balls can be frozen as well. I’ve seen a lot of posts by people who freeze the naked rolled out pops/balls  before they are dipped in chocolate or any other coating, but this post is about how to freeze dipped and decorated pops

And this is how I did it.

First I made the cake pops and dipped and decorated them.

If you are not familiar with cake pops or  how “I” make cake pops, please refer to this post on How to Make Perfect Cake Pops. It outlines many tips and tricks I use in order to avoid many of the pitfalls and problems people encounter in making these delectable little treats.

I write that because this is how I froze “my” cake pops. If you use a different recipe or prepare them in a different way, I can’t really vouch for how your pops will react to being frozen. So please keep that in mind.

After all my pops were dipped and decorated, I wrapped each one individually in wax paper.

They look like big awkward pieces of candy after there all set up.

I then wrapped them all together in another piece of wax paper, I don’t want them to get lonely during their big freeze.

Then I placed them in a airtight container.(Tupperware, Rubbermaid, you get the jist.) Put them in the freezer. Now, go live your life! Or do like I do and wash dishes, vacuum, do the laundry, nurse a newborn and change a million diapers until it’s time to thaw them 🙂

When I took them out of the freezer I left them on the counter for about an hour untouched. Which means leave them in the container. This is what they looked like after I took them out of the container, note there is no condensation on the wax paper. Which means….no condensation on the pops!

As I mentioned I  put them in the freezer decorated with nonpareils and pearl sprinkles, because I wanted to see if the  decorations would be affected after they thawed. They weren’t…. they were perfect!!

Freezing them, left me oodles and oodles of time to get them all wrapped and tagged.

Perfect favors for a baby shower!!

***In the future I would most likely just freeze them dipped in in the main coating to be decorated later. In that way I can make more detailed pops, but not have to make them all in one shot!

I only had these frozen for about two days, I’m sure you can freeze them for longer periods of time without any ill effect on the flavor, but I just haven’t done that yet.

When I froze/thawed these, the temperature outside was pretty cold, so keep this in mind that the results might change in different (hotter/humid) weather conditions!!

If any of you have any tips or tricks in regards to freezing them, please feel free to share them with us!!!
